Turtle–friendly lighting is lighting specifically designed to minimize the ecological impact that traditional lighting can have on turtles and other wildlife, such as beach mice and shorebirds, especially near oceans and beaches. Lighting must be shielded and use low wattage incandescent lamping, preferably yellow, amber or red. LEDs are typically used to brighten an area, making them inappropriate for turtle friendly lighting areas. ‘Turtle friendly lighting’ has enough length to ‘hide’ the bulb, is only open on the bottom with no perforations or other openings, uses the preferred colors of lamping, and uses low wattage bulbs to diffuse the light display.
